European Amber Lager/Vienna Lager The original Amber Lager brewed in 1839 with the newly isolated Lager Yeast by Anton Dreher. Look for a soft, elegant malt complexity in the front with enough firm bitterness to provide a balance to the malt. Some toasted bread character from the Vienna malt may be present. Alcohol content varies from 4.5- 5.5%.
India Pale Ale/American IPA An American version of the original English Pale Ale provided to their Colonial troops in India the early 1800’s. High American hop aroma and flavor of citrus, floral, piney or fruity essences abound in this hoppy and bitter moderately strong, 7%v/v, American Pale Ale. Some caramel or toasty flavors are acceptable in low amounts.
Belgian Strong Ale/Belgian Dubbel First brewed by the monks at monasteries in the Middle Ages. It was revived by the monasteries in the mid-1800s to provide the monks with hard currency. Complex, rich malty aromas with moderate fruity esters including banana, plums, raisins and sometimes dried cherries fill the nose. Spicy phenols and higher alcohols are common and may include clove and spice, peppery, rose-like notes. Rich complex malty sweetness fills the palate. Most examples contain 6.5%-7% alcohol.
English Pale Ale/Extra Special Bitter- Even balance between English hops & malt aromas and flavors, often with a moderately strong caramel character. An average strength to moderately strong, 4.6-6.2%, English Pale Ale fairly balanced between malt and hop makes for an easy-drinking pale ale.
English Brown Ale/Mild Malt accented lightly hopped ale designed to consumed in quantity. This brew is copper to dark brown in color with a malt character that can contain caramelly, grainy, toasted, nutty or chocolate aromas and flavors. In modern times, the Mild term refers to the relative lack of hop bitterness. These are low alcohol session beers with alcohol levels in the 3% range.
Common Cider This sweet cider with a low alcohol level and moderate to strong apple aroma and flavor, makes for a refreshing drink. The ideal cider functions as a ‘session’ drink and companions well with a wide variety of foods. This version contains about 5.5% alcohol by volume.
